Our Barrier Breakers design features the story of the fearless Madam Vice President Kamala Harris and Mrs. Shirley Chisholm America asked Black women what they could bring to the table and Shirley Chisholm and Kamala Harris not only brought their own seat, but they paid for the table through activism and political savvy. The daughter's of immigrants; they blazed the way for brown and black women in American politics.
Chisholm, the first African American woman in congress (1968), was the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for presidency of the United States from the Democratic Party. Her actions created space for the second African American woman and first South Asian American to serve in the U.S. senate.
Kamala Harris carried the torch ignited by “girl power” to become the United States’ first female and African American Vice President. Chisholm and Harris, evidence that little Black girls who walk in their power, grow to be Black women who shatter glass ceilings, and sprinkle black girl magic on everyone.
